Rolex Serial Numbers with Production Year

Use this Rolex serial number lookup tool to estimate the production year of your watch.

Find Your Rolex Production Year

Example: G123456 or 643153

Production years are estimates based on commonly referenced Rolex serial charts. Transition years can overlap.

To look up a Rolex serial number, find the number engraved on your watch, then enter it in the lookup tool above. If it starts with a letter, you can also check the letter chart below. Serial numbers from 1926 to 1987 are numeric and rise each year. From 1987 to 2010 they start with a letter that points to one or two production years (an "M" serial, for example, dates to 2007 or 2008). Since 2010, Rolex has used random eight-character serials that can't be dated from the number alone, so for a modern watch the date on the warranty card is your best guide. Rolex doesn't publish an official lookup, so every chart, including this one, is built from decades of collector and dealer records and gives an estimate, not a certificate.

Below, our specialists at ECI Jewelers in New York's Diamond District explain where to find your serial number, how to read it, what the letters and numbers mean, and how to decode the reference number, clasp code and country code too.

In this guide

Where is the serial number on a Rolex?

Where you'll find the serial depends on when the watch was made. Rolex moved it from the outside of the case to the inside ring under the crystal in the mid-2000s, partly to make it harder to remove and harder to fake.

On a modern Rolex, the serial is engraved on the rehaut at 6 o'clock, visible through the crystal.
Production period Where the serial number is Format
Before about 2005 Engraved on the side of the case between the lugs at 6 o'clock, hidden by the bracelet. Numbers only until 1987, then one letter plus six digits.
About 2005 to 2008 A transition period: you may find it between the lugs, on the rehaut, or in both places. One letter plus six digits.
About 2008 to 2010 On the rehaut, the inner ring between the dial and crystal, at 6 o'clock. One letter plus six digits.
2010 to today On the rehaut at 6 o'clock. Random mix of eight letters and numbers.

On older watches, the bracelet has to come off to see the serial between the lugs. Removing spring bars without the right tool can scratch the lugs, so if you're not confident, ask a jeweler to do it. You'll also find the serial printed on the original warranty card or certificate, and the reference number engraved between the lugs at 12 o'clock.

How do you read a Rolex serial number?

Rolex has used three serial systems since the 1920s. Once you know which one your watch uses, dating it takes seconds.

1926 to 1987: sequential numbers

Early serials are plain numbers that climb as production grows. In 1954, after passing 999,999, Rolex started again from low numbers, which is why a watch from 1954 can have a much lower serial number than one from 1953. That reset means some numbers appear twice, decades apart, so always sanity-check the date against the watch's reference and style. A Submariner, for instance, can't predate its 1953 launch.

1987 to 2010: a letter plus six digits

In 1987, as serials approached 10 million, Rolex switched to a letter prefix followed by six digits, such as R123456. Each letter covers roughly one to two years, and some letters overlap because cases were produced and sold over different periods. The letters don't run in alphabetical order, so use the chart rather than guessing.

2010 to today: random serials

From around 2010, Rolex moved to random alphanumeric serials, for example 9A3B7X21. They carry no date information at all, which improves security but means the production year can only come from the warranty card or Rolex service records.

What year is my Rolex by serial letter?

If your serial starts with a letter, this quick reference gives the approximate production year. Where two years are listed, the watch was made around the change of year, so the warranty card date is the tiebreaker.

First letter Approximate year First letter Approximate year
R 1987 to 1988 P 2000
L 1989 K 2000 to 2001
E 1990 Y 2001 to 2002
X or N 1991 F 2003 to 2005
C 1992 D 2005 to 2006
S 1993 to 1994 Z 2006 to 2007
W 1995 M 2007 to 2008
T 1996 V 2008 to 2009
U 1997 to 1998 G 2010
A 1999 Random 2010 onward

Why can't I find my serial number in the chart?

There are four common reasons a serial doesn't seem to fit:

  • It's a random serial. If your serial mixes letters and numbers throughout, it's a post-2010 random serial and won't appear in any year chart. Check the warranty card date instead.
  • It falls in an overlap year. Production years blur at the edges because cases were made in batches and sold over time. A serial near a boundary can belong to either year.
  • The case was replaced. A watch that received a new case during service carries the service case's serial, which may not match the watch's original era.
  • It's worn, polished or altered. On older watches, decades of polishing can soften the engraving between the lugs. A serial that looks re-engraved or tampered with is a warning sign worth having checked by a professional.

A serial that doesn't match the reference, the dial style or the papers can also point to a watch assembled from mismatched parts. If anything looks off, read our guide on how to tell if a Rolex is real before you buy or sell.

Can you check a Rolex serial number online?

Not with Rolex directly. Rolex doesn't offer a public serial number lookup or online verification, and it doesn't publish its production records. Charts like the one on this page estimate the year from collector and dealer data. Here's what a serial number can and can't tell you:

  • It can estimate the production year for watches made before about 2010.
  • It can confirm that the watch matches its warranty card, since the numbers must be identical.
  • It can be checked against stolen-watch registries and police reports, which is wise before any private purchase.
  • It can't prove a watch is genuine. Counterfeiters copy real serial numbers onto fakes and fake papers.

Authenticity comes from inspecting the watch itself: the engraving quality, the dial, the case and, for certainty, the movement. That's exactly what we do before buying any watch.

What is the difference between a serial number and a reference number?

The serial number is unique to one individual watch, like a car's VIN. The reference number, also called the model number, is shared by every watch of the same model, metal and bezel. The serial tells you when your watch was made; the reference tells you exactly what it is. You'll find the reference engraved between the lugs at 12 o'clock and printed on the warranty card.

How to decode a modern six-digit reference

Modern references have six digits, sometimes followed by letters. Take the steel Submariner Date, reference 126610LN:

  • The first digits identify the model family and generation. "1266" marks the current Submariner Date.
  • The last digit identifies the case material. "0" means Oystersteel.
  • The letters describe the bezel or dial. "LN" stands for lunette noire, a black bezel.

On most modern references, the last digit follows this pattern:

Last digit Material Example
0 Oystersteel (stainless steel) 126610LN Submariner Date
1 Everose Rolesor (steel and Everose gold) 126331 Datejust 41
3 Yellow Rolesor (steel and yellow gold) 126613LB Submariner Date
4 White Rolesor (steel and white gold) 126334 Datejust 41
5 18K Everose gold 126505 Daytona
6 Platinum 126506 Daytona
8 18K yellow gold 126618LB Submariner Date
9 18K white gold 126619LB Submariner Date

Common letter suffixes include LN (black bezel), LV (green bezel), LB (blue bezel), BLRO (blue and red, the "Pepsi"), BLNR (blue and black, the "Batman") and CHNR (brown and black, the "Root Beer"). Older four- and five-digit references follow a different system, decoded in the tables below.

Rolex Reference Number Codes

Decoding older references: every Rolex carries a four- to six-digit reference number, engraved between the lugs at 12 o'clock. To the trained eye, it tells the full story of the watch: model family, bezel configuration, and case material. Take reference 16234: broken into 162 | 3 | 4, the first segment identifies it as a Datejust, the second confirms a fluted bezel, and the third places it in stainless steel with an 18k white gold accent.

Rolex Clasp Codes

Inside every Rolex clasp hinge sits a small but telling stamp. One or two letters followed by a number: the letter denotes the year of manufacture, and the number denotes the month. A clasp stamped G4, for example, was produced in April 1982. Service replacement bracelets carry an additional "S" alongside the year code.

Rolex Country Codes

Rolex Guarantee Certificates issued outside the United States carry a three-digit country code in the upper left corner. This detail confirms where a watch was originally sold. Watches destined for the American market bear no country code, nor do most examples produced before 1980.

What do the red date codes on US Rolex papers mean?

Some vintage papers issued by Rolex USA carry a short code stamped in red. It records the date the watch was shipped to the authorized dealer, using the letters of "ROLEX WATCH" as a cipher for the digits 1 to 0:

R O L E X W A T C H
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0

Read the code as month, day and year. A stamp of "L RCCT", for example, decodes to 3, 19, 98: March 19, 1998. The shipping date can be a little earlier than the sale date on the papers, which is normal.

Why does the serial number matter when you buy or sell?

The serial number connects every part of a watch's story. When we evaluate a Rolex, we use it to:

  • Estimate the production year, which affects value, especially for vintage pieces and discontinued references.
  • Match the watch to its papers, since the serial on the case and on the warranty card must be identical.
  • Check the parts are correct for the era, including the dial, hands, bezel and bracelet. A dial or bracelet that's a decade younger than the case usually means a service replacement, which changes collector value.
  • Screen for problems, such as a watch reported stolen or a serial that has been tampered with.

For buyers, a matching serial on the watch and papers adds confidence and value. Browse our watches with box and papers to see complete sets.

Frequently asked questions

What year is my Rolex if the serial starts with a letter?

Letter serials were used from 1987 to 2010. R is 1987 to 1988, L is 1989, E is 1990, and so on up to G in 2010. Some letters cover two years because production overlapped. Use the letter chart above for the full list, and the warranty card date as the tiebreaker.

Can you date a Rolex made after 2010?

Not from the serial. Since around 2010, Rolex serials are random and carry no date information. The production period can be estimated from the reference number and model features, and the exact date of sale appears on the warranty card. Rolex service centers can also see records for watches they service.

Where is the serial number on a Rolex Submariner?

On a modern Submariner, the serial is engraved on the rehaut, the inner ring between the dial and crystal, at 6 o'clock. On Submariners made before about 2005, it's engraved on the case between the lugs at 6 o'clock, under the bracelet. Watches from 2005 to 2008 may have it in one or both places.

Does the serial number affect a Rolex's value?

Indirectly. The serial itself has no price, but the production year it reveals does. Certain years, transitional features and early production runs of a reference can be more desirable to collectors, and a serial that matches the papers supports a stronger price. For most modern watches, condition, completeness and the reference matter more than the exact year.

Is it bad if the serial number has been polished off?

On a vintage watch, a faint serial between the lugs can simply be the result of decades of polishing, but it should still be legible. A missing, re-engraved or tampered serial is a serious red flag on any watch, and on a modern Rolex the rehaut serial should always be crisp. Have any watch like this inspected before buying.

Does a valid serial number prove a Rolex is real?

No. Counterfeiters copy genuine serial numbers onto fake watches and matching fake papers. A serial helps you date a watch and match its documents, but authenticity has to be confirmed by inspecting the watch itself.
