About the Rolex Datejust
The Datejust was introduced in 1945 to mark Rolex's 40th anniversary, making it one of the longest-running watch collections in the brand's history. It was among the first automatic wristwatches to display the date in a window on the dial, changing instantaneously at midnight — a feature that was genuinely novel at the time and remains the defining function of the collection.
Along the way, the Datejust introduced several design elements that became central to the Rolex identity: the Cyclops lens magnifying the date, the Jubilee bracelet (created specifically for this model), and the fluted bezel in gold that still distinguishes Rolesor models today.
The Datejust's enduring strength is versatility. No other Rolex works equally well at a boardroom presentation, a weekend dinner, and a casual Saturday morning. It comes in three sizes, across a wider range of materials and dial options than any other Rolex collection, and it functions reliably as an everyday watch in a way that a Daytona or a Submariner does not. For many buyers it is the first Rolex they buy. For many collectors it remains the one they wear the most.
Sizes
Datejust 31
The mid-size Datejust, suited to narrower wrists or buyers who prefer more compact proportions. Popular with women who want more presence than the Lady-Datejust 28 but something smaller than the 36. The Datejust 31 uses the calibre 2236 movement with approximately 55 hours of power reserve.
Current references include 278240 (Oystersteel, smooth bezel), 278274 (white Rolesor, fluted bezel), 278273 (yellow Rolesor), 278271 (Everose Rolesor), and diamond bezel variants 278383RBR, 278384RBR, and 278381RBR across yellow, white, and Everose Rolesor.
Discontinued references include the 178-series (178240, 178274, 178273, 178271) and older mid-size references in the 68- and 78-series.
Datejust 36
The original Datejust size and still the most classically proportioned. At 36 mm, it sits at the precise midpoint between a dress watch and a sport watch — substantial enough to read well on most wrists, refined enough to wear under a shirt cuff. The Datejust 36 uses the calibre 3235 with approximately 70 hours of power reserve.
Current references include 126200 (Oystersteel, smooth bezel), 126234 (white Rolesor, fluted bezel), 126233 (yellow Rolesor, fluted bezel), 126231 (Everose Rolesor), and diamond bezel variants 126284RBR, 126283RBR, and 126281RBR.
Discontinued references span several generations: the 116-series (116200, 116234, 116233), the 16-series neo-vintage models (16200, 16234, 16233), and earlier vintage references including the 16013, 16014, 16030, 1601, and 1603.
Datejust 41
The current large Datejust, introduced as the successor to the Datejust II. At 41 mm with updated case proportions, it wears more modern than either the 36 or the discontinued 41.5 mm Datejust II generation. The Datejust 41 uses the calibre 3235.
Current references include 126300 (Oystersteel, smooth bezel), 126334 (white Rolesor, fluted bezel), 126333 (yellow Rolesor, fluted bezel), 126303 (yellow Rolesor, smooth bezel), 126301 (Everose Rolesor, smooth bezel), and 126331 (Everose Rolesor, fluted bezel).
Discontinued Datejust II references include the 116-series: 116300 (Oystersteel), 116334 (white Rolesor), and 116333 (yellow Rolesor). The Datejust II has a bolder case and lug profile than the current 41 — a meaningful distinction for buyers who prefer that generation's look.
Movements
Current Datejust 31 references use the Rolex calibre 2236, designed for reliable performance in a compact case with approximately 55 hours of power reserve. Current Datejust 36 and 41 references use the calibre 3235, which offers approximately 70 hours of power reserve, a Chronergy escapement, and Rolex's Superlative Chronometer precision standard of ±2 seconds per day.
Older Datejust references use previous-generation movements: the calibre 3135 (used in many 116- and 16-series references) is a long-running, highly regarded Rolex movement. Earlier vintage pieces use calibres 3035, 3000, 1570, and earlier depending on production era — all automatic, all designed to run for decades with proper servicing.
Dials
The Datejust's dial range is wider than any other Rolex collection, and dial choice is often the most personal part of the buying decision. A few worth knowing:
Blue is the most popular current dial color across all three sizes — clean, modern, versatile, and strongly associated with the current generation of Rolex sport and dress watches.
Wimbledon features a distinctive green Roman numeral chapter ring on an off-white or champagne field, inspired by the grass courts at the All England Club. One of the most recognizable and frequently requested Datejust configurations.
Champagne is the classic choice on yellow Rolesor models, where the warm dial tone complements the gold bezel and bracelet accents naturally.
Mother-of-pearl and diamond dials shift the Datejust toward fine jewelry territory — popular on smaller Rolesor models and frequently chosen as gift watches.
Chocolate, sundust, slate, and green dials are newer additions that have attracted strong demand; several are specific to certain references and metals.
Vintage and discontinued Datejust dials — including sigma dials, glossy lacquer finishes, and early two-tone chapter rings — are a significant part of the pre-owned appeal for collectors who want configurations unavailable in current production.
Bracelets
Jubilee — Five-piece link construction, created alongside the Datejust in 1945. The dressier of the two standard options, more flexible on the wrist, and the historically "correct" bracelet for the model. Works especially well with fluted bezel configurations.
Oyster — Three-piece link construction with a more robust, sport-adjacent look. The sportier choice, giving the Datejust a cleaner and more modern character. Increasingly common on current-production smooth bezel references.
President — Three-piece semi-circular link construction, reserved for precious metal Datejust references. Gives the watch a more overtly luxurious, jewelry-forward appearance.
Bezels
Smooth — The understated option. No texture, no metal contrast, just a clean circumference. Most common on Oystersteel references and increasingly paired with Jubilee bracelets in current production.
Fluted — Rolex's most iconic bezel treatment. On modern Rolesor and gold Datejust models, the fluted bezel is made from solid gold — 18K yellow, white, or Everose depending on the reference. The fluting catches light and immediately signals the presence of precious metal without requiring a full gold case.
Diamond-set — Factory-fitted diamond bezels on select Rolesor references, offering a fine jewelry character while retaining the steel case and bracelet of the Rolesor construction. Significantly more elevated in appearance (and pricing) than the fluted equivalent.

Buying Guide
Which size?
The 36 mm is the safest choice for most buyers — balanced proportions, the widest range of reference options, and the most historically grounded configuration. The 31 mm suits smaller wrists or buyers who prefer a more understated presence. The 41 mm suits buyers who want a modern, larger-wearing Datejust and find the 36 slightly conservative.
Oyster or Jubilee?
Both are correct. The Jubilee is historically paired with the Datejust and has a dressier, more traditional feel. The Oyster is cleaner and more sport-adjacent. Buyers who plan to wear the Datejust with casual clothing often prefer the Oyster; buyers who lean toward business or formal wear tend to prefer the Jubilee.
Smooth or fluted bezel?
The smooth bezel is more versatile and modern. The fluted bezel is more traditional and — on Rolesor models, where it is solid gold — more visually complex. Neither is objectively better; it depends on how much visual detail you want on the watch.
Current vs. discontinued
Current references offer the calibre 3235 movement, updated bracelet construction with improved clasp systems, and Rolex's current warranty path. Discontinued references offer specific dials, older case profiles, and configurations no longer available — including 16-series neo-vintage references with aged character and vintage references with signed dials, early bracelets, and patina. The right choice depends entirely on what the buyer values.
Is the Datejust a good first Rolex?
Yes, consistently so. It is the most broadly wearable watch in the Rolex lineup, available at lower price points than most Professional models, and recognizable without being conspicuous. Buyers who want one watch that works in every context typically find the Datejust the most practical choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
What sizes does the Datejust come in?
Current production covers 31 mm, 36 mm, and 41 mm. Older references also include the 34 mm Datejust, 37 mm mid-size models, and the 41.5 mm Datejust II.
What movement is inside the Datejust 36 and 41?
Both use the Rolex calibre 3235 with approximately 70 hours of power reserve and Superlative Chronometer certification.
What is the Wimbledon dial?
The Wimbledon dial features Roman numeral hour markers on a green chapter ring, inspired by the grass courts of the Wimbledon tennis tournament. It is one of the most distinctive and frequently requested Datejust dial configurations.
What is the difference between the Datejust 41 and the Datejust II?
The Datejust II was the previous 41.5 mm Datejust generation with a more aggressive case profile. The current Datejust 41 is slightly smaller at 41 mm with a more refined case shape. Both use the same lug width and broadly similar references, but the Datejust II has a bolder, thicker look that some buyers prefer.
What is Rolesor?
Rolesor is Rolex's term for watches combining Oystersteel with 18K gold. Yellow Rolesor pairs steel with yellow gold; white Rolesor with white gold; Everose Rolesor with Rolex's proprietary rose gold alloy. The gold appears on the bezel, crown, and bracelet center links while the case and outer bracelet links remain steel.
Is the Datejust waterproof?
Modern Datejust models are water resistant to 100 meters / 330 feet.
Is the Datejust a good daily watch?
Yes. It is arguably the best daily Rolex — durable, practical, versatile across dress codes, and available in configurations that suit almost any personal style.
